Other methods
Two classic methods you'll hear about: Gann's angles and squares, and Nicolas Darvas's breakout boxes.
W.D. Gann, a trader in the early twentieth century, used geometric angles from highs and lows (the 1×1 line is one unit of price per unit of time), the Square of Nine (a spiral of numbers used to find levels) and time cycles. The angles depend on how the chart is scaled, and there is very little evidence that the methods work as claimed, so treat them as history.
Nicolas Darvas, a dancer, described his method in How I Made $2,000,000 in the Stock Market (1960). He drew boxes around consolidations in rising stocks, bought when price broke above the top of the box on rising volume, and put the stop just under the box's bottom, moving it up as new boxes formed.
