How to get into and out of a trade: now, at a better price, or once price breaks through.
Illustration, not real market data.
What it is
A market order fills immediately at the best price available. A limit order waits for a better price: a buy limit sits below the current price, a sell limit above. A stop order waits for price to move through a level: a buy stop sits above the current price, a sell stop below.
A stop loss is a stop order that closes the trade if price goes against you; a take profit is a limit order that closes it at your target.
How to spot it
Buying a pullback into a zone below the price: buy limit.
Buying only if price breaks above a level: buy stop.
How to use it
Use limits to enter at your zone without watching the screen; use stops for breakout entries.
Always place the stop loss as soon as the trade is open.
Common mistakes
Using a market order in a fast or thin market, where it can fill well away from the price you saw.
Placing a buy stop when you meant a buy limit, which fills straight away at a worse price.
