How far price typically moves per candle: a guide for stops and targets.
Illustration, not real market data.
What it is
ATR measures the average size of recent candles, including gaps (usually over 14 periods). It doesn't show direction, only how much the market is moving.
How to spot it
Rising ATR: the market is getting more volatile. Falling ATR: quieter.
ATR usually jumps around news and the session opens.
How to use it
Set stops a multiple of ATR away (for example 1.5× ATR) so normal noise doesn't hit them.
Size positions so that wider, more volatile stops get fewer lots or contracts.
Common mistakes
Using a fixed stop distance in every market condition.
Reading ATR as a buy or sell signal; it has no direction.
